What Is Subterranean Termites

Understanding What Are Subterranean Termites

Subterranean termites are a common and destructive pest that primarily live underground. These termites are known for their destructive feeding habits, which can lead to significant damage to wooden structures. They build elaborate underground nests and can cause substantial damage to homes and buildings if not managed properly.

Know Your Pest

Subterranean termites vary in appearance depending on their caste. Workers, the most numerous, are small, cream-coloured insects with soft bodies. Soldiers have larger heads and mandibles and are typically pale to light brown. Reproductives, or alates, are winged and dark brown to black. They are often seen swarming during mating season.

Mud Tubes: Subterranean termites build mud tubes to protect themselves from predators and to maintain moisture. These tubes are typically found on walls, foundations, and basement floors.

Swarmers: Winged reproductive termites, or swarmers, are seen in large numbers during their mating flight, usually in the spring or early summer.

Wood Damage: Infested wood may sound hollow when tapped and can have a hollowed-out appearance with visible tunnels inside.

Frass: Termite droppings, known as frass, may be present near infested areas. These droppings are small, pellet-like, and can be light-coloured.

  • HDB Homes: In HDB homes, subterranean termites can damage wooden structures and travel through shared walls. Look for mud tubes on concrete surfaces and check for hollowed wood.
  • Condos: Subterranean termites can affect condos by creating mud tubes on walls and causing damage to wooden elements. Due to shared walls, infestations can spread between units.
  • Landed Properties: Landed properties are prone to subterranean termites due to their wooden structures and soil contact. Termites can easily access these properties and cause significant damage if not addressed. High moisture around gardens and foundations can also attract them.
  • Commercial Buildings: Commercial buildings, due to their large wooden structures and extensive substructures, face significant risks from subterranean termites. Mud tubes might be visible on the building’s exterior and within the structure, indicating termite activity.

Moisture: High moisture levels in soil and wooden structures attract subterranean termites.

Wood-to-soil Contact: Direct contact between wood and soil provides a pathway for termites to enter buildings.

Poor Drainage: Inadequate drainage can lead to moisture buildup, creating a favourable environment for termites.

Subterranean termites can cause severe structural damage to buildings. They can eat away at the wood framing of a building, as well as furniture, cabinets, and other wooden structures. The damage often involves hollowing out wooden structures, making them weak and prone to collapse.

Regular inspections by a professional termite control service are crucial for early detection. Inspectors will look for signs such as mud tubes, frass, and damaged wood. They may also use tools like moisture meters and thermal imaging to detect hidden infestations.

Baiting Systems: Bait stations around the property attract and eliminate termites.

Residual Spray: This spray kills termites on contact and remains effective for several months, helping to control infestations.

Dusting: Powder is applied to termite trails, where it is transferred to other termites or carried back to the nest, ensuring widespread treatment.

  • Eliminate sources of moisture in the ground and in your home such as leaky pipes or faucets.
  • Keep your gutters and drains clear and functioning properly.
  • Regularly inspect your home for termite damage such as hollow-sounding wood and mud tubes.
  • Maintain at least a 6-inch gap between soil and wood surfaces.
  • Store firewood away from your house.
  • Seal cracks in your foundation with caulk or cement.
  • Plant trees and shrubs at least 10 feet away from your home.
  • Engage a licensed pest control company to inspect your home annually.
